ENGLISH ALES BREWERY
THE NEW RELEASE
English Ales first new beer is now being released by owner and brewmaster Mark Francis. This new beer is dedicated to Peter Blackwell. Peter has a passion for British Spitfire airplanes, and one of our sections at the restaurant is called the Spitfire Room. Coincidentally, Mark has his degree in history, and is very passionate about WWII. After some extensive research, Mark found a suiting way to blend both passions and create something new and fun for our taps. In honor of his beer craftmanship and his passion for the Sptifire we are pleased to announce our new beer: JOY JUICE Mod. XXX

JOY JUICE & Beer-Filled Spitfires
In 1944, British Spitfire pilots found a genius way to boost troop morale in Normandy: by turning their aircraft into beer bombers. After D-Day, with traditional supply lines stretched thin, pilots began transporting English pale ale from the Henty & Constable brewery across the Channel.
The beer, nicknamed “XXX Joy Juice,” was racked into jettisonable underwing tanks known as “slippers,” capable of carrying up to 90 gallons. Normally used for extra fuel, these tanks were thoroughly cleaned and repurposed for liquid cargo.
The mission was given the unofficial designation Mod. XXX, a nod to the traditional British mark for strong ale. The altitude of the flights even helped chill the beer. While unofficial, these missions were quietly tolerated, if not encouraged, as a morale-boosting effort for the troops fighting in France.
